If you compare FIFA 18 to its predecessor you will see that there were at least some improvements. At core the game stayed the same as it was made using the same engine. Nevertheless they have tweaked the gameplay a little, for example in the defense, the AI won’t help you too much anymore and you have to place your defenders better than in FIFA 17. For Playstation and PC players the best changes might be that Icons finally got released there also.
As told above there were a few changes on the gameplay as the behaviour of the AI controlled players. But not only defending has changed since the release of FIFA 18 also attacking has become a little different as you will have more chances by flanking the ball into the penalty area. If you got big players as striker than you will have even bigger chances on hitting the ball into the net with a strong header.
I still prefer keeping the ball on the ground and do short and quick passes. If you get used to it you will find it very easy playing the ball across the complete field without leaving your opponent a chance to get it back. Better players who are one or two steps ahead their opponents will have the best chances on shooting much goals with this tactic.
Range shots also become much more dangerous as Goalkeepers often wait to long and just keep watching the ball hitting into the net. EA already released updates to fix this behaviour but range shots are still much more effective than they were back in FIFA 17.
FIFA Ultimate Team
For PS4 and PC there came big updates for FIFA Ultimate team as players on these consoles are able for the first time ever to get Icons/Legends. Icons are already retired players like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Pelé, Maradona, Maldini, Matthäus, Henry and many more. Literally the best players that ever stood on the field for any team. These cards will have at least a orange link to any player which makes them a good fit for any team. Green links will be there to all other legends or players of the same nation.
Another game mode that experienced some major changes. The Journey was first introduced to FIFA in 2016 now one year after the initial release the developers made some good changes already. Last year you were only able to play in the Premier League whereas you are now able to play in all of Europes top leagues including the MLS. This is a big improvement as most of the people will be able now to play for their favourite clubs.
In your Journey you will collect followers and earn money which can be spent on several things as clothes or stuff even a Lamborghini can be bought in FIFA 17. All these new changes make the journey mode worth a shot, even if you did not enjoy it that much in the last year. You have to keep in mind last year was the first year time that we were able to play the new saison mode.
Better dribbling controls
If you like to dribble when playing FIFA I am sure that you have noticed the improved controls for these situations. Especially players with five star skills will have a much better ball handling now and you can really feel the difference. When you know the controls for some tricks it may be very useful to have a few good technical players in your team as some people find it harder to defend them.
Pace is still very important
Especially in FUT (FIFA Ultimate Team) pace is still a very important attribute. Mostly players with high pace are played the most but for a reason. If you make a mistake with a very fast player you have much higher chances to make it up again. Especially for defenders and attackers pace is important as you got much better to shoot goals and also defend your own goal much more efficient.
You might have to switch players a few times until you have found the right one that fits your playing style. But once you found them you will see that you have much bigger chances on winning a game.
This year the graphics have not been updated that much but they still made a few changes to make it look more realistic. The fans got improved a little bit and will also look more realistic, stadium hymns have been also included for many teams which will improve the feeling a lot.
Different camera angles will allow you to experience the game out of a better position. I would suggest you to play a few games in offline mode and try every camera angle that you think will fit best. As the camera can have a big influence on how you are playing at least for me and people I know it is the case.
Summarized you can say that FIFA 18 is definitely a step forward to a more realistic football simulation. My opinion is that most parts of the game have been improved except the long shots, they have become too dangerous and hit the back of the net fat too often. Even though EA claims to have this issue fixed with previous updates, I think the problem is still there it just got a bit better.
FIFA 18 is definitely a must have for every football enthusiast out there. Especially if you are playing FIFA Ultimate Team on PS4 or PC.
